Turn receipts and paperwork into readable PDF scans using your phone, with cropping, privacy, file naming and backup checks.
Use a built-in or trusted scanner
Google Drive's mobile application has document scanning tools on supported Android and iOS phones. Google's documentation describes scanning a page, adjusting it and saving as PDF or JPEG. This mobile workflow is not provided by the desktop-only website.
Look for a trusted scanner already available on your device before installing a new app that offers only a limited free trial or demands unexpected permissions.
Set up the document for a readable result
Place the sheet on a flat contrasting surface under even lighting. Keep the camera reasonably parallel to the paper and ensure all four edges are visible. Avoid shadows that obscure faint letters.
Scan one page first and zoom in on small dates or handwritten notes. If the image is blurry, retake it rather than assuming an automatic enhancement will repair missing detail.
Correct the crop and page order
Review the suggested crop, straighten the page, and choose the colour setting that preserves the most information. When scanning several pages, inspect their order before exporting.
Automated cleanup can remove faint stamps, annotations or pencil marks. Keep an unaltered photo where these details matter.
Save privately and name files clearly
Choose an informative filename with a neutral description and date, without exposing identity numbers in the name. Store the final PDF in a folder with appropriate sharing restrictions.
A file saved in a cloud drive may sync automatically across devices. Check account security and link sharing before storing personal records.
Check the export before discarding paper
Open the PDF and verify every page is upright and readable. Some scanners perform text recognition but others only save photographs, so try searching for a distinctive word if OCR is important.
A scan may not satisfy every institution's original-document requirements. Keep paper originals when they are legally or practically necessary.
