Check the real free offer

Bitwarden's published free individual plan includes core storage for logins and a password generator with access on multiple devices. Paid plans add features, so check the official comparison rather than assuming every function is free. A trustworthy free tier can be more useful than a brief premium trial that later requires payment.

Download the app or extension only from the provider's official site or verified app-store listing. Fake password-manager downloads can capture the very information you are trying to protect.

Make the master password unique

Create a long, unique master password that you have never reused elsewhere. A memorable multiword passphrase can be easier to retain than a short password with predictable substitutions. Avoid putting the complete master password into screenshots or ordinary cloud notes.

Learn the provider's recovery policy before importing credentials. Zero-knowledge vaults may not be able to restore a forgotten master password. Keep recovery instructions and backup codes somewhere private and accessible to you.

Move existing accounts carefully

Review passwords stored in your browser and prioritise email, banking and cloud accounts. If you export a CSV file, it may contain readable credentials; import it only into the legitimate vault and then securely remove the temporary file. Avoid emailing a vault export to yourself.

Change passwords that are shared across sites, choosing a different generated password for each account. Test one or two saved logins before moving the rest so you can find and correct import issues early.

Secure the new vault

Turn on an available second authentication factor and protect the email account associated with the vault. On shared or mobile devices, choose a vault lock timeout that matches your risk and convenience needs.

Practice the recovery process before you need it. When supported, print or safely store emergency codes outside the vault rather than keeping the only backup locked inside it.

Keep the system working

Revisit old saved accounts, remove duplicates, and update compromised passwords. If a message says your vault will be deleted unless you click an unknown link, open the provider's official app instead.

If you later want a different password manager, compare export formats and any paid features before migrating. Maintain two verified access methods during the transition whenever possible.
