Organize Your Ebooks for Free With Calibre
Build an offline ebook library using Calibre, fix metadata, transfer compatible files and keep a reliable backup.
Before choosing a free tool, verify the official provider, understand which functions have no charge, and consider limitations, accessibility and privacy. Follow the practical steps below to avoid unnecessary paid upgrades.
Know what Calibre does
Calibre is free and open-source ebook-management software. It can organise your files, edit bibliographic information, and convert many supported formats when appropriate.
It is a library tool, not a guarantee that every purchased ebook can be copied or converted. Digital-rights restrictions and copyright law still apply.
Import a small sample library
Download the app from its official website and import several books that you own or may legally use. Check authors, titles, languages and cover metadata; online metadata lookups can contain errors.
Create logical categories for fiction, study and reference books. Keep meaningful filenames or library backup files rather than relying on one device as the only copy.
Transfer to a reading device
Check which ebook formats your reader accepts before converting anything. Transfer one book and verify chapters, illustrations, footnotes and non-Latin scripts render correctly.
Conversion is not perfect. Complex page designs and protected formats may fail; keep originals and do not remove access restrictions unlawfully.
Back up and maintain
Schedule an ordinary backup of your Calibre library and configuration when practical. Restore a sample on a second location to make sure both book files and metadata are included.
A clean offline catalogue can remain useful during internet interruptions. Update the software through the official release channel and review old duplicates occasionally.
