Before choosing a free tool, verify the official provider, understand which functions have no charge, and consider limitations, accessibility and privacy. Follow the practical steps below to avoid unnecessary paid upgrades.

Choose the right kind of creative tool

Krita is free and open-source painting software with brushes, layers and tools aimed at illustrators and digital artists. It is especially useful for drawing and painting; a simple phone editor may be easier for quick photo cropping.

Download the desktop application from the official project. Optional paid storefront versions can support development, but the project's regular software is available without a mandatory subscription.

Start with a small canvas

Create a modest document size suitable for your screen and goal. Select one brush, draw a few shapes, and practise undo and layers before installing dozens of external brush packs.

Name your layers so you can distinguish sketches, colours and details. Save the working project in the native format for later editing rather than flattening immediately.

Use references responsibly

Choose reference material you own, have permission to use, or can access under a suitable license. Practise light, shadow and basic composition; do not assume a free image found in search results is free to republish.

If you share art online, keep notes about any licensed source elements and whether attribution is required. Do not reuse another artist's work as an original cover without permission.

Export and preserve your work

Export a PNG for crisp graphics or another format supported by your target website. Keep a separate editable project so future revisions do not require rebuilding the artwork.

Check the image on a mobile screen and add readable alternative text when publishing it in an article. A clean, original image is often more valuable than complicated effects.
